Born and raised in Ahoskie, NC, Crenshaw "CJ" Jones grew up with a strong foundation of family support from both parents. His academic journey began at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), where he attended for two years before being stationed in Hawaii. There, he completed his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 1990. Continuing his passion for mental health and child development, CJ earned his Master of Science in Child Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) in 2001.

Military Service

CJ served with distinction in the United States Marine Corps for 24 years, achieving the rank of Major (O4). A combat veteran, his military career is marked by significant experiences and accomplishments, including deployments in various conflict zones. His leadership and dedication to his country have been exemplary, leaving a lasting impact on his fellow service members and the communities he served.

Boxing Career

CJ's love for boxing began at the young age of 12 and evolved into an amateur boxing career at 17. Over more than 30 years, he accumulated an impressive record of 156 wins and 24 losses. Notable highlights include competing in the Olympic Trials in 1988 and 1992, where he reached the semi-finals in his second attempt. He also won the Armed Forces Championship in 1992. His commitment to the sport has earned him numerous awards and recognition, solidifying his reputation in the boxing community.

Professional Career in Mental Health

For the past 12 years, CJ has dedicated himself to the mental health field, specializing in Outpatient Treatment (OPT) and Intensive In-home (IIH) services. His certifications in these areas have enabled him to provide targeted case management and support to individuals and families, helping them navigate complex mental health challenges.

Leadership and Entrepreneurship

Inspired by his personal struggles with PTSD and the challenges of finding full-time employment, CJ founded I Coach & Teach Boxing Empowerment Inc. As the Executive Director, he leads with a focus on non-micromanagement, securing sponsorships, exploring grant opportunities, drafting proposals, organizing fundraisers, and overseeing all aspects of the organization. Under his leadership, the organization has successfully built and supported comradeship among veterans, helping those with PTSD, lowering A1C and hypertension levels, and boosting self-confidence through boxing.

Philosophy and Motivations

CJ’s leadership is guided by the principle of treating others with the same respect he wishes to receive. One of the most challenging moments in his career was facing federal prison for a violent crime, an experience that significantly shaped his approach to life and leadership. His resilience and commitment to personal growth have driven him to create positive change in his community.

Community Involvement

CJ and his organization actively engage with the community through various initiatives, including feeding veterans, participating in ALS Walks, Breast Cancer Awareness campaigns, and supporting Coats for Kids. He has led and significantly contributed to these community projects, demonstrating his dedication to service beyond the boxing ring.

Future Aspirations

Looking ahead, CJ aims to build a sustainable business that continues to grow and support as many veterans as possible. His long-term goals include reducing veteran suicide rates through expanded partnerships, sponsorships, fundraisers, and grants. He envisions evolving his services to reach more individuals in need, ensuring that his impact on the community continues to deepen.

Personal Interests

In his free time, CJ enjoys traveling, helping the homeless, and supporting veterans facing homelessness and suicide. His personal experiences, including his time in federal prison, have profoundly influenced his career path and life philosophy, driving him to make a positive impact on others.

Advice for Others

CJ’s advice to aspiring boxers and mental health professionals is to remain humble, assertive, and aggressive when necessary. He believes in the principle of "each one must teach one" and the Golden Rule, emphasizing the importance of mentorship and treating others with kindness and respect.

Crenshaw "CJ" Jones's journey from a small town in North Carolina to becoming a respected leader in both boxing and mental health is a testament to his resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment to empowering others.
